Spreads to Target Week 5

Eastern Michigan Eagles @ UMass Minutemen

UMass -6.0

Book lineUMass -6.0
Model numberUMass -13.3

Points checkUMass -17.4, which is 11.4 past the market
SP+ (2026)UMass -6.2 (94th) vs Eastern Michigan -18.0 (127th), home edge +1.5
UMass 20264-0, 3-1 ATS, 36.3 points a game and 12.8 allowed
UMass defense1st in Finishing Drives allowed, 6th in Explosiveness, 92.2 defensive grade
Eastern Michigan offense2-3, 19.0 a game, 122nd Success Rate, 58.5 passing

Book has UMass -6.0. The rating says -13.3 and the points check, built only from each team’s own 2026 point differential plus home field, says -17.4. Two measures that share no inputs land 7 and 11 points past the market, and both say the same thing.

UMass are 4-0 and the defense is the reason. They rank 1st nationally in Finishing Drives allowed and 6th in Explosiveness allowed, on a 92.2 defensive grade, 92.5 against the run, 91.0 in coverage and 84.4 tackling. They have given up 12.8 points a game. That is not a 6-point home team’s profile.

Eastern Michigan have scored 19.0 a game across five, on an offense ranked 122nd in Success Rate, 112th in Explosiveness and 114th in Finishing Drives behind a 58.5 passing grade and a 58.3 pass block grade. Their own defense is respectable in coverage at 81.8 but tackles at 52.6, which is the unit UMass’s 85.1 run grade attacks.

The risk is the number rather than the matchup. Laying 6 means a one-score win does not pay, and UMass play the slowest tempo in the country at 138th, so there are fewer possessions in which to build a margin. The counterweight is that neither record is running ahead of its rating: UMass are 3-1 against the spread, Eastern Michigan 2-3.

Virginia Cavaliers @ Florida State Seminoles

Virginia -2.5

Book lineVirginia -2.5
Model numberVirginia -6.8
Gap4.3 pts, 4.7 after the slate’s own level
Points checkVirginia -8.5, which is 6.0 past the market
SP+ (2026)Virginia +14.4 (21st) vs Florida State +5.7 (53rd), home edge +1.9
Virginia 20263-1, 3-1 ATS, 40.5 points a game and 13.0 allowed
Florida State 20262-2, 1-2-1 ATS, 32.0 for and 25.3 against
Florida State defense102nd Success Rate, 111th Explosiveness, 65.2 coverage

Book has Virginia -2.5 on the road. The rating says -6.8 and the points check says -8.5. The thing worth pausing on is the ratings themselves: Virginia sit 21st at +14.4 and Florida State 53rd at +5.7, which is a two-tier gap being priced as a coin flip with home field.

Virginia have the better unit on both sides. They score 40.5 and allow 13.0, with an offense grading 87.7 overall and 90.0 passing behind an 86.4 pass block grade, and a defense ranked 19th in Success Rate and 4th in Explosiveness allowed on an 88.0 coverage grade.

Florida State’s defense is where the number should come from. They rank 102nd in Success Rate, 111th in Explosiveness allowed and 80th in Finishing Drives, on a 65.2 coverage grade and a 66.3 run defense grade, against the better passing offense in the game.

The honest risk is Florida State’s offense, which ranks 2nd nationally in Explosiveness and 18th in Finishing Drives. They do not move the ball efficiently, 80th in Success Rate, but they score in chunks, and Virginia’s 60.4 tackling grade is the one soft number on that defense. A 2.5-point road lay also offers no margin: this needs an outright win.

Syracuse Orange @ UConn Huskies

UConn +7.0

Book lineSyracuse -7.0
Model numberUConn +0.2
Gap6.8 pts
Points checkUConn -0.9, which is 7.9 past the market
SP+ (2026)UConn -3.7 (tied 86th) vs Syracuse -1.2 (75th), home edge +2.3
UConn 20262-2, 2-1-1 ATS, 34.8 points a game and 22.3 allowed
UConn offense82.7 offensive grade, 85.9 passing, 89.4 run, 13th in Explosiveness
Syracuse 20261-2, 1-2 ATS, 32.3 for and 17.0 against across three games

Book has Syracuse -7.0. Both independent reads call this a pick’em: the rating has UConn by 0.2 and the points check has them by 0.9. Nothing here supports a touchdown.

UConn’s offense is the case. It grades 82.7 overall, 85.9 passing and 89.4 running, and ranks 13th nationally in Explosiveness and 30th in Finishing Drives. They score 34.8 a game. Against a Syracuse defense that is solid rather than stifling at 41st in Success Rate and a 73.6 coverage grade, that unit does not need seven points of help.

Syracuse’s problem is their own offense, 109th in Success Rate and 92nd in Finishing Drives on a 61.7 passing grade and a 58.6 pass block grade. The 17.0 points allowed figure is the headline, and it is the one that makes the market’s number look reasonable.

Two cautions. Syracuse have played three games to UConn’s four, so there is a game less of evidence on one side than the other. And UConn’s defense is the weak unit on the field, 57.9 in coverage and 57.2 tackling, so this is a bet on outscoring rather than on stopping anyone. Taking the points rather than laying them is the whole point of the position.

Ohio Bobcats @ Kent State Golden Flashes

Ohio -3.5

Book lineKent State +3.5
Model numberOhio -10.1
Gap6.6 pts
Points checkOhio -7.7
SP+ (2026)Ohio -10.5 (109th) vs Kent State -22.4 (130th), home edge +1.8
ScoringOhio 30.3 for / 31.0 against, Kent State 16.3 / 36.0
Kent State offense137th Success Rate, 125th Finishing Drives, 42.8 run block
Recordsboth 2-2, both 2-2 ATS

Book has Ohio -3.5 on the road. The rating says -10.1 and the points check says -7.7. Both want roughly a touchdown more than the market.

Kent State have scored 16.3 a game and allowed 36.0. The offense ranks 137th in Success Rate, 125th in Finishing Drives and tied 126th in Field Position behind a 42.8 run block grade and a 44.7 pass block grade. The defense ranks 133rd in Success Rate and 137th in Finishing Drives on a 50.4 run defense grade.

Ohio are mediocre rather than good, 2-2 at 30.3 points a game with a 69th-ranked Success Rate offense, and their own defense ranks 138th of 138 in Finishing Drives allowed. The case here is entirely relative, and it only needs to be.

Both teams are 2-2 against the spread, so neither record is running ahead of its rating, and this is a road favourite of under a touchdown rather than a large lay. Kent State at home is the risk, and 3.5 is a short number to have to cover: a win by exactly three is the likeliest way it fails.

Marshall Thundering Herd @ James Madison Dukes

James Madison -19.0

Book lineJames Madison -19.0
Model numberJames Madison -26.0
Gap7.0 pts
Points checkJames Madison -24.3, which is 5.3 past the market
SP+ (2026)James Madison +9.9 (tied 36th) vs Marshall -12.5 (115th), home edge +3.6
James Madison 20264-0, 4-0 ATS, 44.8 points a game and 12.3 allowed
James Madison defense1st in Success Rate, 18th in Finishing Drives, 90.3 run defense
Marshall3-1 but 1-3 ATS, defense 130th Success Rate, 54.0 coverage, 48.9 tackling

Book has James Madison -19.0. The rating says -26.0 and the points check, built only from each team’s own 2026 point differential plus home field, says -24.3. Both land five to seven points past a number that is already three scores, which is the unusual part: a market this far out on a favourite is normally where the two measures start pulling back.

James Madison are 4-0 and 4-0 against the spread. The defense ranks 1st nationally in Success Rate and 18th in Finishing Drives, on an 85.4 defensive grade and 90.3 against the run, and has conceded 12.3 points a game. The offense scores 44.8 behind a 77.1 pass block grade at the 15th-fastest tempo in the country.

Marshall are 3-1 but 1-3 against the spread, and the units explain which of those two records to believe. Their defense ranks 130th in Success Rate, 118th in Finishing Drives and tied 127th in Havoc on a 54.0 coverage grade and a 48.9 tackling grade, against a James Madison offense ranked 44th. Their own offense ranks 94th and tied 128th in Finishing Drives, against the defense ranked 1st.

The risk is the size of the number. Nineteen points asks a favourite to stay engaged into the fourth quarter, and James Madison’s fast tempo shortens the game rather than lengthening it, so there are fewer possessions in which to build the margin. What argues the other way is the 4-0 ATS record: this is a team that has already covered numbers of this shape, and Marshall’s record is running behind its rating rather than ahead of it.
