Basketball Statistics Glossary

There’s a lot of terms and abbreviations in sports statistics. Here’s a cheat-sheet for the basketball-related ones used on this site.

Pace – The number of possessions per 40 minutes.
FG % – The percentage of 2-point or 3-point shots (Field Goals) made from the total number of attempts.
Turnover % – The percentage of times a team loses the ball without making a shot on goal.
Off Rebound % – Percentage of times a team retrieves the ball after they have missed a shot.
FT Per FG – Number of free-throws attempted per the total number of shots attempted. This shows how often a team gets fouled.
Steal % – Percentage of times a team gets the ball without their opponent making a shot.
Block % – Percentage of field goals a team stops before reaching the goal.
Def Rebound % – Percentage of times a team retrieves the ball after their opponent missed a shot.
Fouls – Count of all fouls committed during games.

Power Ratings – opponent-adjusted measures of what teams can most consistently do to win games. These numbers are generated by several companies and individuals throughout the industry.

  • SoS – Strength of Schedule – how a typical top 25 team would do against a team’s future schedule. Higher numbers (and lower ranks) indicate a tougher schedule.
  • NET – NCAA Rating (Details). Lower ranks indicate a better performance.
  • BPR – Bayesian Performance Rating for Offense and Defense by EvanMiya.com. Higher numbers (and lower ranks) indicate a better performance.
  • Eff – Efficiency Rating for Offense and Defense by KenPom.com. Higher numbers (and lower ranks) indicate a better performance.
  • SRS – Simple Rating System by StatHead. Higher numbers (and lower ranks) indicate a better performance.

Some additional betting related terms:

Spread – The point spread is the pre-game estimated margin of victory for a team. A plus sign in front of the number indicates an underdog. A minus sign indicates a favorite.
ATS Record – Against the Spread. The record of a team that covers the pre-game betting spread. For example, if a team is -1.5, they need to win by 2 points to cover.
O/U Record – Number of times a team scores more (over) or less (under) the pre-game betting estimated total scores of a game.
Vig – Also knows as Juice. A second set of odds that serves as the price of placing the bet. For example, a vig of -110 means a bettor would have to wager $110 to win $100.
